This infant mourning lithograph from 1885 features a white dove carrying a banner reading ‘Gone but not forgotten.’ Just beneath it is an hourglass encased in a floral wreath filled with symbolic blooms.
The inscription reads:
‘In loving memory of our dear little son
John Elgin Porch Died June 11, 1885
Aged 2 days...’
At the bottom is a printed mourning verse from “Epitaph on an Infant" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which reads:
‘The lovely bud so young and fair,
Called hence by early doom.
Just came to show how sweet a flower,
In Paradise would bloom.
Ere sin could blight, or sorrow fade,
Death came with friendly care;
The opening bud to heaven conveyed,
And bade it blossom there.’
We incorporated antique lace into the display and encased the piece within an antique frame.
Measures approximately 37 inches tall by 15 inches wide.
Shipping cost for this piece is higher than normal due to oversized-specialty requirements and handling. We appreciate your understanding!
